Silverplate candelabra before/after--cut-glass stems; sockets tightened, armature stabilized
Silverplate candelabra with cut-glass stems: sockets tightened, armature stabilized, tarnish reduced and tone unified.

SILVERPLATE RESTORATION

Conservation-grade restoration for electroplated silver—structure stabilized first, surface refined with low-loss methods, replating considered only when warranted.
Silverplate is a thin deposited layer over base metal. Our work preserves original surface and crisp detail by sequencing correctly: stabilize structure, resolve distortion and joins, and only then refine the finish with controlled, low-loss methods. If broad wear-through remains after responsible restoration, we’ll discuss selective or full replating as a final step—not the default.

AT A GLANCE

  • Structure first: correct distortion, stabilize sockets/joins, and refit hardware before any finishing
  • Low-loss polishing: protect engraving, engine-turning, and chased or repoussé work
  • Tone balancing: calm copper-colored bleed-through and unify components in a set
  • Replating sparingly: only when substrate remains visible after proper restoration
  • Clear documentation: materials, methods, and care notes provided with every project
Silverplate coffee urn before/after--dents reduced, joins tightened, chased panels preserved; tone unified with careful finishing and selective replating.
Silverplate coffee urn with tap: dents reduced, seams tightened, chased floral panels protected; tone unified with careful finishing and coverage where wear-through remained.
Silverplate urn before/after on marble base--rim corrected, feet tightened; tarnish reduced; chased cartouches preserved; unified, restrained sheen.
Silverplate urn on marble plinth: feet tightened, rim distortion corrected, tarnish reduced; chased cartouches and relief preserved; finish unified to a restrained sheen.

WHAT WE RESTORE

Nineteenth- and twentieth-century Sheffield and electroplate; American and European silverplate; tea and coffee services; trays and salvers; candlesticks and candelabra with bobeches and nozzles; epergnes and centerpieces; baskets and bowls; covered tureens; ecclesiastical vessels; presentation pieces and trophies; hotel or club hollowware. Mixed-material objects receive coordinated handling. Each project is assessed for base metal, construction, prior repairs, and armatures or weighted components before treatment.

METHOD AND SEQUENCING

Cleaning removes residues and coatings without disturbing original surface. We re-true geometry, close seams, refit handles and finials, and resolder failed joints so pieces stand, sit, and pour correctly. Surface work reduces scratches and calms pits while preserving rims, knurls, inscriptions, and maker’s marks; tone is balanced so components read as a coherent set without ahistorical brightness. Only when wear-through still shows after proper restoration do we consider coverage. Final steps include optional protective coatings and clear care guidance.

WHEN REPLATING IS WARRANTED

We propose replating sparingly—when copper or nickel substrate is broadly visible in critical areas, when historic over-polishing has thinned decoration beyond what careful finishing can reconcile, or when prior repairs left disruptive color differences. Structure is stabilized first; surfaces are prepared minimally; masking protects crisp transitions; the target is a correct period tone, not an overly bright mirror.

FAQ

DO YOU ALWAYS REPLATE SILVERPLATE PIECES?
No. Restoration and careful, low-loss finishing come first; replating is considered only when wear-through remains visible.

WILL POLISHING REMOVE DECORATION OR HALLMARKS?
Our methods protect crisp edges, engraving, and chased detail by limiting pressure and compound load.

CAN YOU CALM COPPER-COLORED “BLEED-THROUGH”?
Often. Localized bleed-through can be visually calmed with tone work; broad exposure may warrant selective or full replating.

CAN YOU FIX DENTS AND DISTORTION ON LARGE TRAYS?
Yes. We straighten and planish to recover plane and profile before any surface finishing.

HOW DO I SHIP A SET SAFELY?
Double-box with generous padding, immobilize loose parts (bobeches, finials), and include contact details; we provide a packing guide with your estimate.

ESTIMATES, PACKING, AND TIMING

Begin by sending clear photos, measurements, and any deadline notes. For large trays or complex sets, an in-shop review may be advised before final scope. Turnaround varies with condition, fabrication needs, and whether coverage is included; we maintain correct sequencing so results endure in use.
