REVIVING HISTORY: THE RESTORATION OF AN ANTIQUE BRONZE WALL SCONCE

11/10/2014

A TESTAMENT TO RESILIENCE

This antique bronze wall sconce not only tells the story of architectural artistry but also of survival and resilience. One of the few treasures to withstand the devastating impacts of Hurricane Sandy, this piece carried the weight of history and sentimental value for a Margate family. The sconce had endured decades of exposure, resulting in significant corrosion that masked its original splendor.

PRECISION IN PRESERVATION

The restoration of this bronze wall sconce required not only skill but also a deep respect for its historical integrity. Our first step was to carefully remove the layers of corrosion that had accumulated over many years. This delicate process was essential to prevent further damage to the bronze underneath.

FORTIFYING ANTIQUES AGAINST TIME

Understanding the importance of authenticity in restoration, we sourced period-correct screws to replace the damaged or missing originals. This attention to detail ensured that the restored sconce would maintain its historical accuracy and aesthetic value. Once the structural integrity was restored, we polished the sconce to bring out the inherent beauty of the bronze. We opted for a satin finish, which is historically appropriate and highlights the intricate details of the sconce’s design. To ensure that the sconce could continue to withstand the harsh coastal environment, we applied a triple layer of high-quality lacquer. This protective coating is designed to guard against humidity, salt air, and other corrosive elements, extending the life of the sconce for many more years.
