THE RESTORATION OF A 19TH-CENTURY FRENCH FIREPLACE FENDER AT CHELSEA PLATING COMPANY

At Chelsea Plating Company, we take great pride in restoring historical artifacts to their original grandeur. Recently, we had the honor of refinishing a 19th-century French fireplace fender, constructed of brass and bronze, with gold leaf. This detailed process brought new life to a piece that once graced the hearths of a bygone era.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FIREPLACE FENDERS

Fireplace fenders are not merely functional items; they are also decorative elements that reflect the style and craftsmanship of their time. In the 19th century, French fireplace fenders were often elaborately designed, showcasing the elegance and opulence of the period. This particular fender features intricate brass work and bronze greyhounds on each side, exemplifying the high level of artistry. Restoring such a piece requires a deep understanding of historical design and techniques to ensure authenticity. Fireplace fenders served both a protective and decorative function, preventing embers from escaping the fireplace and adding a touch of luxury to the room. The intricate designs often mirrored the architectural and decorative trends of the period, making them significant historical artifacts today.

THE RESTORATION PROCESS

The restoration process began with a thorough assessment of the fireplace fender's condition. Years of wear and exposure had dulled its once-brilliant appearance. Our team carefully cleaned the fender to remove dirt, grime, and any remnants of old finishes. This preparation was crucial for the success of the subsequent refinishing steps. Using specialized cleaning agents and techniques, we meticulously removed all contaminants. This stage is essential to reveal the true state of the underlying metal and to prepare it for the precise application of gold leaf.

APPLYING THE GOLD LEAF

Once cleaned, the brass elements of the fender were ready for the application of gold leaf. Gold leafing is a delicate art that requires precision and expertise. Our skilled artisans painstakingly applied thin sheets of gold leaf to the brass sections, ensuring an even and smooth finish. The application process involved careful handling to avoid any imperfections, resulting in a radiant, gilded surface that highlighted the fender's intricate details and complemented the bronze greyhounds. The gold leafing process involves several steps, including applying a special adhesive called "size," waiting for the right tackiness, and then gently laying the gold leaf onto the surface. Our artisans' steady hands and keen eyes ensured a flawless application that adhered perfectly to the contours of the brass.

FINAL TOUCHES AND INSPECTION

After the gold leaf was applied, the fender underwent a final inspection to ensure the finish was flawless. Any minor adjustments were made to perfect the appearance. The restored fender now gleamed with the same brilliance it would have had in the 19th century, ready to reclaim its place as a focal point of any fireplace. Our final touches included careful burnishing to smooth out any tiny wrinkles in the gold leaf and applying a protective clear coat to safeguard the finish. This attention to detail ensures that the fender will remain stunning and resilient for years to come.
